How to Use the SSH Command
The ssh
command is used to establish a secure shell connection to a remote server or computer. It allows you to log in to a remote machine and execute commands on it securely.
To use the ssh
command, follow these steps:
-
Open a terminal or command prompt.
-
Type
ssh
followed by the username and hostname or IP address of the remote server you want to connect to. For example, to connect to a server with the username “user” and IP address “192.168.0.1”, you would run:ssh user@192.168.0.1
If the remote server uses a different SSH port than the default port 22, you can specify it using the
-p
option:ssh -p 2222 user@192.168.0.1
-
If it’s your first time connecting to the remote server, you may be prompted to confirm the authenticity of the host by verifying its fingerprint. Type “yes” to proceed.
-
Next, you will be prompted to enter the password for the remote user. Enter the password and press Enter. Note that the password will not be displayed on the screen for security reasons.
-
Once authenticated, you will be logged in to the remote server. You can now execute commands on the remote machine as if you were physically present.
-
To exit the SSH session and return to your local machine, type
exit
and press Enter.
The ssh
command also supports various options and features, such as key-based authentication, port forwarding, and running commands remotely. You can refer to the ssh
manual page (man ssh
) for more information on these advanced features.
